1. Drive more efficiently
This may seem like a no-brainer but the early morning scramble to work or the five o'clock rush can cause us to accelerate rapidly and brake quickly. Besides rapid acceleration and frequent braking, drivers should avoid hauling cargo that can weigh down the vehicle or reduce the aerodynamics if the cargo is stored on top in a carrier. The U.S. Department of Energy also suggests avoiding idling for more than a few minutes and to use cruise control whenever possible.
2. Keep up with vehicle maintenance
Keeping a schedule for your vehicle's regular tune-ups will not only keep it running longer, it will also improve gas efficiency. First, check those tires regularly. A tire pressure gauge found at any gas stations or auto shop should do the trick. Your vehicle's proper tire pressure can be found on the sticker located on the driver's side doorjamb or in your owner's manual. Using the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil can improve gas mileage by 1% to 2%.
3. Plan your trips
Planning errands, appointments, and other trips will save you time and money. When planning, account for time to allow your engine to warm up. Your vehicle's engine is much more efficient when it is warmed and will use less gas. If you are one of the millions in the U.S. that commutes to work, make sure you drive your most fuel-efficient vehicle and stagger your work hours, if permitted, to avoid rush hours. Consider carpooling or ride-share programs in your area.
4. Consider purchasing a more efficient vehicle
Selecting a new car is one of the most important decisions you will make. There are a number of online resources that allow you to research engines, fuel efficiency, emissions, and some have calculators to show how much you will save in gas each year. You can also speak to a local expert that can point out the most fuel-efficient vehicles in their line-up.
